A recognition of the importance of barns is already contributing towards the stabilization, adaptation and historical preservation of barns in the Grand Traverse area, as several owners of barns featured in Mrs. Johnson's book have begun to paint and repair their barns this summer. I believe that this book has helped farmers realize the importance of their barns in the larger picture of the history of the Old Mission Peninsula. Much of this history would have been lost had the Barns of Old Mission book not captured it. Ann Swaney, Archivist & Librarian, Northwestern Michigan College, Traverse city, MI ----------------------------------------------------------------------- A superb example of specialized regional history. Of special note is the extensive sections on farming and community life through the years from the 1840's to the present day. This is a remarkable and superbly illustrated treatise on the barns of the Old Mission Peninsula. The book is very highly recommended for students of architecture, Michigan history, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the structures and histories of midwestern barns. Midwest Book Review June 10, 2007. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The history of old Mission Peninsula can be seen in its barns. As the character of the peninsula changes, these barns are disappearing. Evelyn Johnson's Barns of Old Mission Peninsula and Their Stories does a commendable service in gathering images and narratives of these structures. As a historical society whose interests coincide with Evelyn's, we enthusiastically endorse this. Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society. |
