Evelyn has lived on Old Mission Peninsula since 1995 and became interested in
barns as a result of driving the 13 miles to Traverse City nearly every day
and seeing so many fascinating barns along the way.
As a retired teacher with an inquisitive mind, she had to learn more about them.
Soon she was interviewing barn owners and photographing their barns. It was the
equivalent of photographing life. “I knew they each had a history and a story to tell.
I wanted others to know, my grandchildren included, that a part of who we are
today comes from someone whose roots were firmly planted on a
farmland where they always had a barn.”

Evelyn won the Michigan Historical Award of excellence in 2006, for a self-
published book, The book sports a shiny gold seal as a result of this award. In
August 2007 she won the  Historic Preservation Award for Rural Structures from
the Grand Traverse Heritage Center in Traverse city, MI.
